Once that is determined, your pest management professional (PMP) will develop a specific treatment plan for your individual needs. That was (roughly) how my first death in Ark went. The first step in hornet control is to identify the pest. "Go go go!" I yell at my noob self as the edges of my screen quickly fade into red and black.īAM The crumpled body of my non-survivor starts to shake, rattle, and roll as the loosey-goosey rules of video game physics begin to flop my corpse around in the water. "I can't outswim him with a broken leg!!" I can feel my pulse race as the music is now literally screaming at me in surround sound. It is as if my computer is somehow connected to my actual heart rate. Panic sets in as I repeatedly swivel my camera back around again while I desperately try to see if this bastard is gaining on me or not.īAM "Dude I think he just broke my leg!!" I yell into my headset as the sound of a heartbeat monitor and some drums have now begun to overlay onto the intense music. I can't even focus on anything other than the feeling of terror as I doggie paddle away from a prehistoric killing machine. I spin my camera around and DAMMIT! This Carno is following me into the water! Must swim faster! "How do you speed swim!?" I yell at my BIL and I can barely register his reply. "Do these fuckers swim!?" I yell at my brother. I frantically move my character around the now useless rocks and head out into the open water. Looks like it's time for a new hiding spot! But where?! To the beautifully rendered sea, of course! This beast lowers its head and is now making a beeline straight for my nearly naked toon. Then suddenly it's no longer interested in smashing the base. I strafe a little out of my hiding spot to get a good look of this unfolding and see this massive raptor looking thing smashing the base. I hide behind some large boulders and I inform my brother that I'm pretty sure this thing is wrecking his house. I start screaming and run back out of the house and start racing north up the shore. "Uh, can the dinosaurs climb on top of our house?"ĬRASH The Carno breaks through the roof of my new home and begins tearing the place apart. I retreat into the house and shut the door and I now notice what appear to be dust clouds and tufts of straw swirling around the ceiling above the storage chests that I had been outfitted from earlier. The intense music is still playing in my ears but now I hear heavy thumps to accompany it. Crises averted! I'll just go back inside and wait him out from within the safety of these straw walls. I go back inside and shut this reassuring door of hay and run to the back door and repeat my now tried and true surveillance technique. I peek out slowly and look around and I don't see anything dangerous. I can only see a lonely campfire and the ocean front. I open the front door I had just rushed through a moment ago and I don't see any dinosaur legs pacing back and forth. Well the only way to find out is to check, right? The steady thumping music hasn't gone away so I'm willing to bet this thing is still stomping around our yard all hungry and pissed off. It could be right outside waiting for me. I died near the house though, so he still might be somewhere around there" he tells me. "Goddammit!" My BIL barks and across the top of my screen I read his short obituary: "Sorry bro!" I laugh nervously and quickly follow-up with "Is it gone? Does it go back where you aggroed it from? Are the dinos in this game tethered or free range?" "I'm not sure. New and intense music fills my ears and I run to the front door and get inside the house as fast as I can and shut the door the door behind me. Suddenly my BIL yells into the mic that he's got a dino on him and he's coming in hot back to the house. I keep stopping to keep taking screen shots of the ocean because I can't believe beautiful the sky is and how well the water is rendered. I keep getting distracted while I gather mats because I am blown away with how gorgeous this game looks. I decide to stay in this "safer" area with some wild trikes wandering around. We chat away while I comb the beach for plants and rocks and he lets me know he is gonna head south to go hunting for food. After showing me around this lovely cove that he had built his thatch ranch in, he gave me some cloth gear out of a wooden chest and he sent me out to collect fibers and whatnot. My BIL convinced me to start playing Ark and he had me spawn on the southeast coast so I could be near his base.
